Originally formed in 1963 as Ingersoll Engineers, Inc., and later known as Bourton Group, Inc., our proud heritage of operational excellence continues to be leading edge. Our firm was originally established as a subsidiary to the Ingersoll Machine Milling Company as an operations optimization firm to support the installation of Ingersoll's large machines in client companies.
By 1980, Ingersoll Engineers worked with a wide range of clients and had grown globally with offices in the UK, France, Italy, Germany, and Australia. Our services expanded to address not only technical issues with equipment, but also all aspects of a manufacturing business including product costing, organizational issues, and support IT systems. It was during this time Ingersoll Engineers established the concept of "Cellular Manufacturing" and became well known for implementing manufacturing cells globally at many major manufacturers.
In 1989 we wrote a landmark book called Making Manufacturing Cells Work published by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME).
In the 1990s, we established the "Four Dimensions of Cellular Manufacturing." Those dimensions were Equipment, People, Support (scheduling and IT systems), and Accountability (performance measures), emphasizing that manufacturing cells represented far more than just moving equipment into cell groupings.
In 2001 Implementation Services acquired Bourton Group, Inc. with the intent of complementing the firm's rich heritage and expert operations knowledge to create the world's leading implementation firm. We combined the firm's collective knowledge and experiences with more recent industry advancements such as the Toyota Production System, World-Class Manufacturing, Re-engineering, Lean Manufacturing, Change Management, Value Stream Mapping, Balanced Scorecard, Six Sigma and new information technology capabilities, to form the foundation for the creation of . We believe our firm's experience, together with our research and thought leadership, puts us at the forefront for operational excellence for the consulting industry globally. In 2008 we added information technology capabilities to our services and launched Performance Analytics℠, a stand-alone component of , that enables companies to measure and analyze their business real-time, fostering autonomation of business processes.
