Increasing Throughput in Furnace Operations via Kaizen

Training the troops in Lean and Six Sigma methodologies, and involving those employees in the analysis and implementation process were the challenges presented by a manufacturer that extracts specialty metals from a bi-product purchased from a supplier.

A number of issues had been identified with the Melt Shop’s furnace operations. To maintain success in the future, its facility needed to become a continuous improvement environment with employees at all levels who are able to identify and implement improvement initiatives, and are proficient in Kaizen.

Activities in this case study include:

  • Provide overview of the Lean and Six Sigma methodologies to senior staff
  • Plan, execute and validate results of a Kaizen event
  • Identify / create metrics to measure event success and estimate the financial impact in achieving Kaizen objectives
