Growth, which included $220 million in sales generated by 1,600 associates with approximately 250 people in a wholly-owned subsidiary, and a collection of 200 to 300 home-based workers, created a strain for an automotive-parts company whose clients included Honda, Chrysler, and Toyota. There were more than 3,000 active part numbers and between 3,500 and 4,000 inactive part numbers contained in the MAPICS system, which was underutilized. To identify the source of annual inventory shrinkage, the company elected to perform a physical inventory approximately once every quarter.
