IX® in Action
Challenges in forecasting material shortages for the delivery of molten iron prompted a multinational vertically integrated steel producer to seek assistance from Implementation Engineers. The company transported molten iron in train cars to a casting facility located 40 miles away. A consistent supply of molten iron was essential for continuous casting, but the eight-hour lead time for each train and unexpected delays during transportation caused disruptions. Implementation Engineers was enlisted to enhance planning and scheduling processes and to implement a Predictive and Prescriptive technology solution to support the sustained improvements. Activities during IX® included:
- Conducted initial period of data analysis to develop and train a predictive model. Example data included GPS time stamp data showing cycle times and route delays
- Analyzed casting information from the perspective of operator best practices to create more standard and predictable bottle fill levels as well as cleaning practices
- Piloted initial predictive model using Microsoft Excel to manually pull in the necessary data to test the predictive capability
- Implemented real-time dashboards used daily to coordinate internal logistics between sites and drive decisions on how many bottles / train to load. These decisions, previously made by gut feel, were now data driven and more predictable
