IX® in Action
A leading US-based smelter and manufacturer of utility components and power systems enlisted IE's OE Team to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the workforce gap between their current staffing levels and the anticipated needs for future growth at one of their smelters. This facility had dedicated process improvement teams striving to enhance throughput and quality. However, the smelter faced significant challenges with high turnover rates and difficulties in retaining essential skills. Over a 6-week period, the following activities during IX® were accomplished:
- Created a current vs future state organizational design for the operations section of the Smelter based on predetermined changes
- Analyzed levels of work complexity and conducted accountability mapping based on levels of decision making required in the future with anticipated changes in technology, processes, and equipment availability.
- Conduct Span of Control Survey across each region of the Smelter
- Conducted a gap analysis in manpower planning using current numbers, turnover analysis and taking skills gaps into account
- Provided Leadership Team with an optimal future state manning plan with optimal spans of control to drive action plans
