Operational Excellence in Mining
Guiding and mentoring an open pit mining operation with its continuous improvement program was the target for an IE team. The partnership began with the development of a Balanced Scorecard system to give the leadership team visibility to the operation’s Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), including gaps between current and planned performance. A Value Stream Analysis of the Mine, Mill and Exploration departments was needed to validate existing metrics, define the operation’s true capability, and delineate a plan to close the gaps.
More than 30 projects were identified during the Value Stream Analysis, and they were completed with an overall benefit of more than $50 million from increased revenues and cost savings. Additional benefits are expected from “in process” projects that are currently ongoing.
